About the policy
- How much is the death benefit, and what is the monthly premium?
- Will the premium ever go up? Will the benefit ever go down?
- Is there a waiting period? What would be paid in the first two years? (See waiting periods.)
- Does the coverage last for life, or does it end at a certain age?
- What happens if I miss a payment? How long is the grace period?
- Does the policy build cash value?
- How long do I have to review the policy and cancel for a full refund? Many states require a “free look” period after the policy is delivered.
About the insurance company
- Which company issues the policy?
- What is its financial strength rating from an independent rating agency such as AM Best?
- How does my beneficiary file a claim, and how long do claims usually take to pay?
About the agent
- Are you licensed to sell insurance in my state? You can confirm this with your state’s department of insurance.
- How many insurance companies can you compare for me?
- How can I reach you later if my family has questions?
Red flags
- Pressure to decide on the spot, or being told an offer ends today
- Claims that the coverage is a government program or benefit
- Being asked to pay in cash, or to write a check to the agent personally instead of the insurance company
- Being asked to sign a blank or incomplete application
- Being told to leave health conditions off the application
- Being told to cancel existing coverage before the new policy is approved
A good agent will answer every question plainly and give you time to decide. Ask for important answers in writing.
